Eine Big Band (auch ’Jazz Orchestra’ genannt) ist ein mit Blasinstrumenten und einer Rhythmusgruppe besetztes Jazz-Ensemble. Die übliche Besetzung besteht aus 5 Saxophonen (manchmal ergänzt oder ersetzt durch Flöten oder Klarinetten), 4 Posaunen, 4 oder 5 Trompeten (oft mit Flügelhörnern als Nebeninstrumenten), Klavier, Gitarre, Kontrabass und Drums. Heutzutage gibt es aber Musik für eine Vielfalt an Besetzungen, abhängig von Stilrichtung und Möglichkeiten.
Zu den bekanntesten Namen in der Geschichte der Big Band gehören unter anderem Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller und Quincy Jones. Obwohl Big Bands oft nur mit Swing assoziiert werden, gehört zum Beispiel auch Latin, Jazz Fusion und sogar Progressive Rock zum gängigen Repertoire der modernen Big Bands.
