Contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait penser, la désignation des « instruments de la famille des bois » n’a rien à voir avec le matériau dans lequel sont fabriqués flûte, hautbois, clarinette, basson et saxophone. Elle se réfère en réalité à la façon dont est produit le son, soit par une anche en bois de bambou spécial, soit par un biseau, un conduit d’air plat. De l’énorme variété d’instruments à vent qui existaient de l’Antiquité à la période baroque, les instruments à bois les plus courants – flûte à bec, traverso (ancêtre de la flûte traversière), hautbois et basson – se sont développés jusqu’à l’époque de J. S. Bach (baroque). Néanmoins, il se passa encore quelques siècles remplis d’avancées techniques et d’innovations avant que ces instruments n’obtiennent leur forme actuelle.
A partir du milieu du XVIIIe siècle, la clarinette a été introduite aux bois. Au plus tard au début du XIXe siècle, l’instrument a trouvé sa place dans l’orchestre symphonique et est devenu très populaire en tant qu’instrument soliste. Ceci est souligné par le célèbre Concerto pour clarinette de W. A. Mozart.
Enfin au XIXe siècle, on a ajouté le saxophone, qui est entièrement en laiton mais qui appartient aux bois. Comme pour la clarinette, le son est produit à l’aide d’une anche et le système de clés est également presque identique. Le saxophone n’a néanmoins jamais vraiment trouvé sa place dans l’orchestre symphonique classique. Cependant, il tient, avec la trompette et le trombone, le premier rôle des bois dans le jazz, la soul, la pop et le rock.
